Even in our most difficult times of life when we are facing the greatest adversity we can discover that actually we have many and varied strengths that we used to help us. What if therapy started with what’s already working? One of the things I value most about Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is its strengths-based approach.
The will to survive and succeed is very strong and fundamental to humans. We have evolved to be extremely flexible and adaptable to many situations that’s essential to our survival. You just have to look around you to see people that faced extreme adversity such as illness, redundancy, divorce, bereavement other disasters in their lives to see that those people find the strength to carry on and in many cases not just to carry on but to thrive.
We can use this idea to reflect on our own experiences of difficulties in life and to appreciate how we’ve come through them and what is helping us to cope and carry on. Solution focused work is what we call a strength-based therapy this means we identify strengths that we are using and are helping us. The solution-focused approach assumes that clients have resources and expertise that can contribute to finding solutions.
Some strength based questions might be:
· What is helping you to cope at this time?
· How have you managed in the past?
· What strength have you used to get through this?
These kind of questions help us to appreciate our achievements, our strengths and our resilience in the face of difficulties in life. They remind us that even when we feel bad we have that we assets we use to help us overcome adversity.
I work with many clients who suffered from anxiety. They worry about things that may or may not happen in the future and they worry about their ability to cope with these events happening such as a serious illness the breakup of a relationship losing their job. The fact is that when a difficult situation does happen we carry on and we find ways to cope. That doesn’t mean that we don’t need a hand now and again to help us remind us that we have got those strengths.
Using a strength-based approach such as solution focused Hypnotherapy can be very positive and uplifting. It can be used to help uncover and highlight strengths that we already have and that can help us. Sometimes the first step towards change is recognising that you already have more resources than you realised.
