What is hypnotherapy for dental anxiety and phobia?

Having a healthy smile is something we all want. Hypnotherapy can help you prepare for your next check up and treatment by helping you learn to relax and reduce feelings of anxiety.  However, many people experience anxiety or tension when thinking about having dental treatment . This may be related to a difficult experience in the past or to raised levels of general anxiety.

How does hypnotherapy for dental fear and phobia work?

Hypnotherapy for dental anxiety or phobia aims to help you to relax during treatment by lowering anxiety before treatment and helping you to learn techniques for you to use on the day and during treatment.

An initial consultation will help you to understand how this anxiety is formed and what is going on in the brain to help us get rid of it.  Sessions after this will consist of helping you learn and experience relaxation techniques and hypnosis to help you relax and reduce stress. You will have a recording to listen to between sessions and techniques to practice.

Who is dental hypnotherapy for?

Over 50% of the British public claim they are anxious about a visit to the dentist, but almost 12% have such high levels of anxiety, it is classed as a phobia (British Dental Journal 2019). If you have dental anxiety or phobia which makes having dental treatment more difficult for you, hypnotherapy can help you cope.

I also see people who suffer from Bruxism (teeth grinding or jaw clenching) which can damage your teeth. Bruxism or teeth grinding can be related to higher than usual levels of stress or anxiety. Hypnotherapy can help you to relax and reduce anxiety.

What do you need to do?

You won’t need to talk about anything you don’t want to as we will be concentrating on making you feel happier and more relaxed about your next dental treatment. Practicing the techniques between sessions will also help you.
